Top-overall draft pick Royce Lewis joins Cedar Rapids Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS — Royce Lewis is a Cedar Rapids Kernel.

The top-overall pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft was assigned Saturday by the parent Minnesota Twins to Cedar Rapids. An 18-year-old shortstop from California, Lewis began his professional career with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Twins, where he hit .271 in 36 games, with three home runs, 17 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

Lewis walked more times (19) than he struck out (17).

He is the first No. 1-overall pick to ever play for Cedar Rapids. His signing bonus was $6.725 million.
